I HATE-and no that is not too strong of a word-that expression. Maybe because people often pronounce it over me as if it is a end all be all statement. There is no I in tEaM-but there is a ME.
See I am me and you are you-and in a world where difference in diversity should be common place, celebrated and embraced. Instead we are told to wear uniforms, confirm, support the brand, embrace the culture, go with the flow and even THERE IS NO I IN TEAM.
See I have lots of identifiers, so do you, but they are not what makes me-me. Its not what make me and you – YOUnique. We have driver’s license numbers, socials, passport number, school ID numbers, employee alias. We are identified by your BMI, our weight, our socio-economic status, our team, our corporation, even our employer. Everything that identifies me as a person, an individual, a human that lives and breathes and has emotions is stripped away. We live in a society that names have vanished we aren’t a person – we are one of many. Cattle are tagged, birds are banded and humans in WWII were tattooed-these days employers in other countries are introducing chips to track their employees.
This makes me extremely angry and frustrated. I know who I am. I am strong. I am stubborn. I go against the flow. I stand out in a crowd. I fit into corporate America just enough to get by and most of the time it feels like it’s an ill fit and that its giving me blisters.
People I work with-especially those that have drank far too much of the corporate Kool-aid-don’t care if my eyes are blue, my favorite color is purple or even that I like strawberries. To them, I a means to an end. A body to fill a seat, in fact how many times do you have to be told that an automated system could do your job-before we start believing that our life is disposable? worth nothing? easily replaced? that we are just another commodity? Just another expendable resource?
But I smile (and most of the time I nod politely) and sometimes I stand tall for the sheer joy of going against the flow and being non-compliant (does that make me a rebel? is so, so be it). I know something that they don’t know. I can walk proud; I can stand tall. I know who my Father is-no not the man that fathered me, gave me 50% of his DNA, that raised me and provided for me-not that father…my heavenly Father.
Here’s some things He says about His kids, and He loves us no matter how YOU-nique we are:
Psalms 139: 13-17
For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
17 How precious to me are your thoughts,God!
How vast is the sum of them!
The Lord your God is with you,
the Mighty Warrior who saves.
He will take great delight in you;
in his love he will no longer rebuke you,
but will rejoice over you with singing.”
I have carried you since you were born;
I have taken care of you from your birth.
4 Even when you are old, I will be the same.
Even when your hair has turned gray, I will take care of you.
I made you and will take care of you.
I will carry you and save you.
For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Before I was born the Lord called me;
from my mother’s womb he has spoken my name.
You are special.
You are an individual.
You are more than a number-you have a name-and that identifies you.
You are more than the sum of your mistakes.
Your weight, size or BMI isn’t who you are.
You are choosen.
You’ve been adopted.
You are beautiful. Your are YOU-nique.
You are loved.
KNOW this-there is someone praying for you-and we’ve never met yet.
There is no I in TEAM – but there is a ME and a YOU – let’s be YOU-nique together.
