Faith is defined as:
complete trust or confidence in someone or something.
Confidence is defined as:
the feeling or belief that one can rely on someone or something; firm trust.
Hebrews 11:1-3, 39-40 NIV defines faith as:
Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for. By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised, since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.
James 2:14, 17, 20-24, 26 NIV states:
What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless ? Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called God’s friend. You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone. As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead. can walk away any time.
Faith is not something you can put in a bubble, protect and nurture into growing. Faith is more like a muscle, it has to be used to grow. Ever work out? You know how it burns-in a feels so bad it’s good or is that a feels so good it’s bad kinda way? That’s like faith-its like flying, it’s like falling and it’s believing not with evidence but on trust (credit) of God’s character. When you chose faith you are required to have a new kind of vision…no not x-ray…but futuristic. With your futuristic vision you have to see into the future the things God has promised you…as if you have already lived them and it’s an indisputable fact.
Let me explain. We know the world is round because we have photos beemed from space to prove it. However, in 1492 Columbus BELIEVED the world was round and TRUSTED that is he sailed west he wouldn’t run off the edge of the world. We look back and say-yup, Columbus was right. Having futuristic vision says I’m choosing to trust God when there is no evidence, or possibly when all the “evidence” supports something contrary to nature (Abraham trusting God for a son even though he and Sarah were way past the age to have babies.)
Trust is a choice
It’s a choice no one makes you do it…you alone.
You have that freedom.
Wrestling with trusting God or questioning God’s plan, timing, guidance will leave your frustrated, stressed out, short tempered…possibly even physically ill. I”ll be the first person tell you that trusting God is always best- even if it’s not easy.
Trusting God when it hurts, when you don’t understand, when the diagnosis doesn’t change, when the prognosis doesn’t get better, when you chronically ill parent has lived 3 years longer than the 2 years the do when it’s such a dark time in your life you either can’t see light at the end of the tunnel or your terrified that the speck of light you can see is a train…it’s a choice.
It’s not a choice of intellect or emotion, in fact those can and often do directly contradict…it’s a choice based on faith. Its a choice based on God’s character and Him proving (not that He has an obligation to) that He is trustworthy-He has our best interest in mind. Unlike people God keep His promises.
Maybe you doubt that you can ever possibly be healthy…you have too many issues…physical issues, forgiveness issues, spiritual issues. Trust God. Choose to see yourself as the healthy person God wants to help you become.
